Character Wizard "Object must be in scene"

edited July 2017 in Technical Q&A
Hi Adventure Creators

I have been lurking here for a while and asked a few questions in order to see if Adventure Creator was what I was looking for.
I just purchased this amazing tool - and having much fun!
=;
BUT also some trouble..I'm trying to setup a character, following the wizard.
The "next" is greyed out "Object needs to be in scene".
The character is in the scene..so not sure what I'm doing wrong?
Any direction would be much appreciated

I have uploaded an image that shows what I mean.

  • I'm afraid the image is much too small to see what's going on.  What kind of object is it, and what are your versions of both AC and Unity?

Make sure that the scene object is enabled in the Hierarchy (the checkbox at the top of its Inspector), and also make sure that the field in the wizard is referencing this object instance, and not its source prefab if it has one.

Oh, it's the first link ..https://ibb.co/fciG2v

It's my character its on the scene.
I'm using latest version of AC, just downloaded it.

    Thanks a bunch

EDIT: I'm a little confused. I just tried to follow the tutorial, the legacy ones, after I set up a rigged character with Mixamo and assigned animations.
When adding that with the Character Wizard I get "The wizard cannot modify an excisting character"

When is it better to use legacy vs mecanim in regads to character animation with Adventure Creator?
As default all the animation clips are "generic", and I'm manually setting them up as legacy otherwise they will not work.

Any direction would be much appreciated.

  • And what Unity version, specifically?  The wizard requires that the supplied object is both in the scene and enabled - so if both of those conditions are met, then it could be due to a change with Unity.

Know that you can also create characters manually if need be - see these tutorials.

So far as which animation engine to use goes, you really should use Mecanim as a rule unless you had a specific reason to use Legacy - and that's generally only if you aren't able to convert your animations to non-legacy.

Legacy was the only option in AC's first release as it predated the Mecanim/Animator system - but the latter is now the default choice for 3D characters.
  • Thanks Chris
    Will change to mecanim.
I followed the video tutorial you made, that's the only reason I used legacy :)
Thanks for the easy to understand video btw..very helpful!

    Cheers,
  • Don't know if this is helpful -- but I had the same issue when the Character Wizard window was un-docked. But when I followed the video instructions and docked the window -- viola! it worked.
