Pre-rendered scene depth and lighting

Hello to all members.
A very new member here so sorry if my questions sound dumb.
I want to create a 2.5D adventure game by using pre-rendered scenes created in blender. These scenes would either be simple images or small videos with a bit of animation.

First question is how do you fake the depth of the 2.5D scene in adventure creator? What i desire is a bit of scalability of the character when walking towards/away to/from the camera into a "deeper" area of the 2.5 scene.

Secondly how can i realistically match the lighting of the pre-rendered scene with the lighting inside AC to affect the characters? For example i have a pre-rendered scene with several bright and dark spots. I want my character to be affected by these lights while passing by them i.e. he becomes darker or brighter depending where he's at the scene. What sort of information should i pass to AC so it can simulate in a realistic way these bright and dark spots of the scene? Is it TInt Maps?

Thanks guys.
Billy

Welcome to the community, @vkouroub. Thank you for your patience over the weekend.

2.5D in AC refers to the use of 3D characters and pre-rendered backgrounds, which sounds like what you're after as well.

AC's provided 2.5D mode works by supplying a background image or movie, but having characters move around in a 3D space - with the NavMesh imitating the same space that the pre-rendererd background would occupy if it were "real".

Character depth in "Pure" 2D games in AC work by scaling the character according to their on-screen height, but in 2.5D, there's no need for cheating - since characters move towards/away from the camera as though the game is in 3D.

This also allows lighting to be realistic - since you can place lights in 3D space to match up those in the pre-renderered background.

For a guided tutorial video, see here. An additional text tutorial on shadows for 2.5D games can also be found here.

See the Manual's "Preparing a 2.5D scene" chapter for details on setting up 2.5D scenes specifically, but the above video will give you a good overview of all the key steps when it comes to making such a type of game.

  • Thank you very much. Will try the videos right now!
