unity UI only partly working

So I added a dialogue options rebuilt in unity UI to get a scrollbar working on it. The scroll bar works and the text is showing the correct AC dialogue options... however, all the unity button stuff is not showing up. No highlights, no press color, there's not even the button's graphic, it's only showing text for a button.
Any idea what could be breaking those aspects?

It's because icon+text was on in the menu manager and it doesn't treat text buttons the same way as text only mode treats them... at least I know what the unexpected behavior was from now.
