Can I have two dialogue types in one game?

Hi there! My name is Jon, and I've been wanting to make my own adventure game! (or at least a prototype of one.)

I noticed in some adventure games, narration is encased in a text box (mostly Sierra games) and spoken dialogue from characters can have their own coloured text free from text boxes. (like in most LucasArts adventure games.)

I want to tackle the dialogue like in Yahzee's 5 Days a Stranger/7 Days a Skeptic games, where that was possible. Is there a way I can go about doing that in Adventure Creator?

  • Hi @JonCausith, welcome to the community!

Indeed you can - if you create a Dialogue: Play speed Action that has no speaker, it'll be considered a narration.  Narration speech can be displayed in a separate Menu to the rest.  In your Menu Manager, select the Subtitles Menu (provided you're using the default UI), and you'll see that you can limit that Menu's display to just Narration.  Therefore, you can duplicate this Menu, limit it to narration (and the original to those with speakers) and style it how you see fit.
  • Thanks, @ChrisIceBox ! And for that matter, thank you so much for making this engine! I always wanted to be able to make this kind of game for me and my friends to enjoy, regardless of platforms! (Yes, I did use AGS, but they don't have Mac support for my Mac-using mates.)

That's interesting to note! Thanks so much! I'll try and have a playable room available sometime within the month to share! There's so much I want to put into this demo, and you've helped me make this look much better now! :D
