Align text manually

edited May 2015 in Technical Q&A
Hey Guys :)
I'd like to know if it is possible to change the alignment of text in e.g dialogs or subtitles other than upper left, upper center, and so on.

What I want to achieve is having a background texture for the text, but I don't want the text to start right at the border of the box. It just doesn't look nice. And I don't want the text to be centered.
I tried to asign the background texture to the "Subtitles" Menu and set the texture of SubsLineLabel and SubsSpeakerLabel to none. But the menu needs to adjust the height to fit the speech. If I change the Size of the Menu to Automatic, the only option for Subtitles Elements is "Aligned" which will then lead to how it looks in the image:

I'm not familiar with scripting, so if that is the only solution it would be nice if someone can explain in detail what I have to do :\">
Thanks :)

  • I'm not clear if you mean that you want to align the text in their element boxes, or on the screen itself.  The position of the menu itself can be changed within the menu's properties, and the alignment of the text can be changed within the properties box of that particular element.

If you give the background texture to the menu, and remove it from the elements, and set the menu's Size to Automatic, you can then use the Element spacing slider to affect how close to the border the text is.

For complete control, though, know that you can also make use of Unity's own UI tools, and connect them to AC very easily.  I'd say Unity's UI is more up to the task of such fine-tuning, so you may want to at least investigate it.  A tutorial on linking Unity UI to AC's Menu system can be found here.
  • Thank you so much - the spacing option solved exactly my problem. Now I feel stupid for overlooking this option.... but thanks a lot that you answered it anyway! :\">
