Seeking Advice from Experienced Game Developers!

edited May 15 in Adventure talk

Hey everyone!

I work in IT/AI, but I’ve always loved games and wanted to make them. Problem is, I don’t know anyone in the industry, and after 2-3 years of learning on my own, I still feel like a beginner. And honestly… I get why! There’s just so much to learn—art, animation, coding, sound, game design—any one of these could take years to master.

But recently, I bought Adventure Creator, and… wow. The creator clearly knows everything—art, animation, effects, how different games work—and packed it all into a tool (more like an engine on top of an engine!). Even crazier? This thing’s been around for 10 years and keeps getting updates and evolve!

So I gotta ask @ChrisIceBox and all indie developer:

  1. How did you learn all this? Did you study everything one by one, or was it just years of experience?
  2. Are you a solo dev or a team? To @ChrisIceBox : Your forum replies make it seem like you know every part of game dev inside out! It is not like human can do! It is crazy!
  3. Any tips for beginners like me? I’m good at coding, but game dev feels huge and overwhelming. Where should I focus?

Really appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Conny

  • While I'm the author of AC, it's important to know that development has been shaped by the help of the community here: offering suggestions, advice, and wishlists that AC really wouldn't be the same without at this point.

I certainly don't know all there is to know about gamedev - and I'm not sure it's possible for any one person to do so. There are so many aspects and disciplines involved, and while the availability of tools like AC and Unity have made it technically possible for solo developers to create their own game, it's not a requirement for it to be a solo effort.

You don't need to push yourself to learn more than you're comfortable with. I'd say it's better to focus on the aspect you enjoy the most, whether that be coding, design, art, sound, or a mix.

Collaborate with others who have different talents, or make a game that plays to your own strengths. You really don't need to worry about "quality", in the raw sense, when starting out - making anything, regardless of how it looks or plays, is a great achievement.

  • Thank you for your reply, @ChrisIceBox! I am so appreciate for your input. I am interested in a mix of activities, but I can’t do art or music. So, my choices are limited to coding and storytelling.

I think collaborating with others is definitive a good idea. I have a friend who can draw manga, but he doesn’t know much about making games. I believe this is a great start. Let’s take a look what kind of game we can create together with the help of AC! :)
