I want to have my player have skills, which can be buffed through items being worn. All very normal.
My thought is to have the base skills as global variables. Each item would then have a parameter which featured it's buff. Each time the player opened or closed the inventory screen, the current skill values would be calculated and kept in a separate set of global variables called current_skillname.
In this way you could view and tweak the base, change items and manage the current skills.
Is that a sane way of doing it or is there a better way?
Alternatively is there an integration with a skills asset that may work for me?

Sounds similar to the way the the "Equipment system" package over on the Downloads page works. It may need a bit of tweaking to suit your own needs, but give it a try in a fresh project if you haven't seen it yet.
