Simple 2D Animation

Hi all, I'm a new user here, pleased to be here! I watched the 2D Primer plenty times and have been prepping my own game. I got stuck though when trying to make my own character, the video tutorial and AC manual glances over Unity's animation tools and I've been trying to get to grips with it. Is there a relatively simple way to make eg a Unity walk animation? I'm an animator so I have all my animation frames ready, but I tried dragging frames into the animator to try and recreate Brain's keyframed timing but I just can't seem to do anything, lol, driving me bonkers.

  • Welcome to the community, @mikdog.

As AC relies on Unity for animation playback, an understanding of Unity's Animation tools is necessary.

Guidance on creating sprite-based animations in Unity can be found on the Unity website here:
    https://learn.unity.com/tutorial/introduction-to-sprite-animations

You'll want to avoid dragging your sprites into the Animator directly, however. Instead, you need to add them to the Animation window.

    Essentially, the steps are:

    • Attach an Animator to the object you wish to animate, and assign it an Animator Controller asset
    • With the object selected, open up the Animation window
    • Use the window to create a new Animation Clip asset, and drag the sprites into the Timeline
    • The clip should then appear in the Animator automatically
  • Thanks Chris! I think this is what I was trying to do. I was able to create one new Animation Clip Asset with a single idle frame that had a single keyframe, which made sense. Then I got stuck trying to create a second Animation Clip. I think I needed to right-click a drop-down window or something to create a new one, after looking at another tutorial. Going to try again! And will keep your notes handy. Thanks.
