Does AC support anything akin to dialogue Barks? That is, NPCs talking in the background with a speech bubble shown above them for a fixed time which disappears without user interaction?
I feel I may be able to use a custom script running an action list but the dialogue in that list will need user interaction to close won't it?

If speech is run from an ActionList whose When running field is set to Run In Background, then the speech itself will be considered "background speech".
Background speech has its own options in the Speech Manager - while it can be optionally skipped with mouse-clicks, it will never display indefinitely.
Subtitle menus can be limited to display for either blocking or background speech, making it possible to rely on a separate Subtitle menu that's only used for background speech. A "speech bubble"-style Subtitles menu can be found on the Downloads page.
