Narrator's Speech Volume

Hello, I've run into a little problem with the narrator's speech. I've created a Speech Sound object in my scene, adding the sound component to it and setting the sound type to Speech.

By attaching said object to each player/npc Speech AudioSource, I've got the Speech slider in the options menu to work perfectly.

The only speech sound I'm using is the scroll one, which I assigned an audio file to in AC Game Editor -> Speech -> Subtitle-Scrolling Audio. I've got it for both, narration and speech text, and then set the type to Speech.

As I said, this works perfectly for characters, but no matter what I do, the Narrator's scroll sound will allways come out through the SFX group, as it responds to it's slider in the options menu, but never to the speech one, unless I reroute everything to Speech, and leave SFX unused, which doesn't really help at all.

Is there a place to change or reroute said scrolling sound to Speech as well?

I'm using Audio Sources instead of Audio Mixer Groups. Can it be done without switching to that one?

  • Unless you create a dedicated "Narrator" NPC, narration scroll audio will to play from the scene's "Default Sound" object, as set in the Scene Manager.

    You could set this Sound's type to Speech to have it sync to Speech volume - or are you using it for anything else, e.g. menu SFX?

    Hey Chris, thanks for your response!

    I'm using it for SFX (which includes menu sounds as well, yes). So if there's no way to reroute that... I'd have to create a new Narrator NPC then?

    Is there a way to globally change it, or I'd have to manually set every speech node that has no character in it to this new npc?

    Also, could the mixer groups option help in this case?

  • Apologies - it's been a while since I've looked at this area, so I'm a little rusty on the behaviour.

    If a Narration line has regular speech audio (i.e. audio directly associated with that line), then that will be played from an auto-generated Speech object.

    This should - but currently isn't - be the same for scroll-audio. I'll look into amending this in the next update. Thanks for bearing with me, and for the details of the issue.
