How to make hotspots work?

edited February 2015 in Technical Q&A
Ive been AC using for ages but I left hotspots for a while (a year), now when I come back to them none of them seem to work, I have been tearing my hear out but I cannot get them to show up, any ideas?

PS, how to show the menu too? So infuriating not being able to see AC do a single thing.

I should point out im using UFPS. I Just tried the prefab from the downloads page still no luck, it's really weird..

ps I cant even see the cursor
  • If you've left it all for a year, you might not be aware that Cursors and Menus now have their own managers, and you have to explicitly define them.  You can make use of the Demo's managers until you're ready to customise - just assign the Demo_CursorManager and Demo_MenuManager asset files at the top of each, and you'll be able to make use of each.
  • Yeh I noticed that, doesnt seem to help though - It could be that im using unity5 too, Ive tried everything I can think of and cant see the hotspots. Id rip it all out and start again but im worried about losing lots and lots of intricate paths and triggers. Im also stuck on an old version because when I upgrade it kills unity5 which could also be an issue.
  • I remember ages ago I had a cursor definitely but this is not showing. Is there any sense in me deleting all of AC and starting again? I guess this is something small but I need some sort of check list of things to check before I wipe out potentially hard earned work. This is killing me it really is, wasting so much dev time on this and constantly going in circles, I am on the verge of coding a custom solution to do exactly what AC does... lol.
  • I'm sure we'll sort this out for you, don't worry.  A couple of things to try:
    1. See if the demo games work - then we'll know if menus just aren't displaying for your own game, or for at all.  Choose Adventure Creator -> Getting started -> Load 3D Demo managers from the top toolbar, and run the Basement scene in AdventureCreator -> Demo -> Scenes.  If Hotspots display there (assuming you haven't modified the original Menu Manager), then they should show up.
    2. The next update of AC, 1.42, will be out later today and should fix certain compatibility issues with Unity 5.  It's always recommended to use the latest version of AC, because of the bugfixes - it could be that you're experiencing some long-solved bug from a previous release.

Thanks for the help, just seeing a response kept me sane :)
Demo doesnt seem to work, cant move around or see the hotspots, I guess I should start with a fresh project with latest AC, make sure that works, and then somehow delete my old one and bring the new one over.
  • So latest version does work fine in unity5 in a fresh project, which is good. But still dies in my current project. I had hoped you could copy and paste between projects and just copy everything into my existing project, but you cant, only between scenes :(
  • "Between objects" of what type?
  • Earlier on I briefly saw the menu and cursor for AC, but I dont know what I did but its gone again, even then I couldnt move properly when it was there. Unfortunately it's time for me to give up on trying to integrate AC with UFPS, I simply cannot get it to work, and I have a game to write. Will be coding custom solutions so perhaps I can still gain something from the code. I had originally planned to use AC for all my dialog, interacting with signs, machines etc.
  • Lol right after I deleted it all, I brought it back in for one last try, and it started working as I remember years ago...! So there is still hope I can move and see the menu and cursor etc.. Must have been something weird, damnnn.. Will keep trying time for a stiff drink.
  • 8 beers down I still seem to have AC. Not sure wtf I did to kill it but let the lesson be learned, delete and start again. I just hope my npc paths still work when I copy them in, the main reason I didnt ever delete it.
  • OK So I had some time this weekend, I started again from scratch with AC, and everything seems to work, BUT, I still cannot get a hotspot to work, the mouse pointer is definitely the AC one, yet when I hover over a hotspot, it doesnt change. Ive put so much time into this and I still cannot do it, Im starting to feel like I have some sort goldfish brain.

Here is what I am doing exactly:
1 - make a cube and put it in scene
2 - make hotspot, place it over cube, a bit larger
3 - click plus to add examine interactions
4 - click create to make an interaction for me
5 - click on the one it makes and set to dialog "play speech"
6 - type some text in "line text"
7 - run game, move mouse over the cube,

Nothing happens.. I do see the AC default icon, not the examine one or talk to one, pressing p will bring up the pause menu so it is working.

Hope I can fix this one day, really want to start on my game dialog and story etc!

OK so I turned off "lock cursor in centre when game begins".. this of course wont let me play the game properly (because im using ufps) but gives me the first valuable clue Ive had in weeks. It looks like the mouse pointer has some sort of offset, I have to hover to the right of it and then things work as expected!.. How do I keep the cursor locked, and somehow calibrate the centre? In this screenshot you see my cube where the hotspot should be, and where my mouse has to be to get it to work.

Also with "lock cursor in centre when game begins" on, I still cant see the hotspot even if I look to the top right (by that I mean factor in the offset), it seems that it will only show up when I untick that. Im using UFPS 1.4.9 and AC 1.42c.

Wow, well not sure what I did, I messed around for ages and it is actually working fine in my game now, I wish I knew what issue I was facing because Im bound to come across it again, but for now, it seems to work... Im excited but also scared :-) Anyway thanks for the help, if I ever work out what was going on I will certainly post it to save my own and hopefully someone else's sanity. This is the first time ive had this actually properly working, and it seems like I will have a lot of fun with it now!..
  • That's good to hear!  I'm sorry you had such frustration earlier, but I hope things get easier for you from now on.
  • Thanks man, very glad to say I just spent a whole night messing with AC and things are coming along now! I have a model of my brother in the game and you can now have a conversation with him and see his portrait photo! A very fun evening indeed, can't wait to see what I can achieve this year with this.

Thanks again for your patience :-)
