Changing the Narration Text Positioning

So today, I've been adding some "Examine" events to a few of my Inventory items. I'm wanting to make it to where, instead of a specific character speaking the line, with their talking animations playing and such, (Since half the time they'd be behind the inventory box, so their wouldn't be much of a point to have them animate during this action) I instead want just plain text to appear on screen for a few moments, with maybe a voice line of some sort, when I get to the voice acting stage of development.

Now I know how to achieve this. Just leave the character box blank, when setting up the dialogues. This registers it as a "Narration" line, instead of a character speech line, which is exactly what I want. The problem, is the positioning of the text, as shown in this screenshot.

I've looked through the "Menu" option in the...well, menu. :P That's usually where you can alter the various Menu's, HUD's, and so on. But I don't see any way I can change the positioning of the "Narration" text. I see an option to change the "Character Dialog" text, but no option to change the position of the "Narration" text. Any solutions?

If you want narration text to be displayed in a different position (or even style) to your regular subtitles, you can do so by creating a separate Menu that's used exclusively for narration text.

Duplicate your existing subtitles Menu and set the For speakers of type property to Narration Only.  This will limit that Menu to only show narration text, and you can modify the Menu's appearance to suit.

You'll then have to do the opposite for your normal subtitles Menu - change that field to Characters Only so that narration text won't be shown.
  • Hi Chris - wondering if this is still the suggested solution to change the position of the narration text in later versions of AC? In the editor, my narration text plays at the top left of the screen and looks good, but in the Web HTML build, it shows off the edge top-left of the screen so it’s not readable by the player as it’s mostly offscreen.

I did this and it works well, ta. Only thing I wasn't able to do was change Narration text colour. I see there's a thread elsewhere which is 'make an NPC that's invisible and use that for narrator' so if I really wanted that, I could do that, but would have to place the NPC in every scene there's narrator text I guess. Can live without custom text colour. edit: actually I think all I need to do is uncheck 'use character text colour' for the new Subtitles Menu and choose a custom colour as is suggested here:
